It's been exciting to get to know Kwan over the years as an artist and a friend. My first introduction to Kwan was actually online. I was subscribing to the Dust Bunny (now defunct DIY space in Philly) Patreon, where they were broadcasting COVID social distancing safe live streams and interviews at the height of the pandemic in early 2020. WiRL, another great Philadelphia DJ who ran the space, interviewed Kwan for the Patreon account. I had been unfamiliar with Kwan's work, but I particularly appreciated Kwan's informed perspectives on art, sociopolitical topics and the Philadelphia dance music scene. I followed him on social media, but it took about 3 years before we connected more in person because of how the pandemic continued to mess everything up.
Fast forward to 2022/2023, I would see Kwan out at DJ events, and he also held it down at the International Bar with fellow APA VIP Strglcty. I asked Kwan to DJ his first CDJs set in January 2023. I loved his selection at the event, and wanted to have him back to do an all vinyl set, which is his expertise. Finally in October 2023, we had a very special all vinyl APA party at Upstairs at the 700, inviting all of the APA supporters who are experts at vinyl. Kwan did an excellent job reading the vibe of the room in the late afternoon, and I was happy Dan Edwards captured a recording of it.
This mix is a live set from that all vinyl APA party back in October 2023. The set in this recording is crunchy, soulful, funky, eclectic, driving and deep...all wrapped around the warmth of hearing vinyl in the club. Please enjoy Kwan's mix from this special occasion!
