Years before Ancient Puzzle Arts even existed, I DJed and produced dubstep as Rx. I was living on South Street in Philly and had a subwoofer on the top floor, so I could make as much noise as I wanted. The year was probably 2009 and I was keeping up with DJ mixes from the West Coast and the UK. In some mixes, I heard DJ Collage on vocals and really loved his style over dubstep beats. I reached out to him and eventually made two songs with him....Tekalick, which came out on my Concussions EP on Abstract Logic Recordings ( www.beatport.com/release/concussions/244671 ), and Aqua Chat, on my Rx album on Made in Glitch ( www.beatport.com/release/rx/885404 ).
We would remain social media friends for a very long time. However, the weird thing about social media is sometimes it keeps feeding you people more frequently over time. I used this as an opportunity to reconnect with DJ Collage (now known as DJ Mista Chatman), who remains one of my favorite collaborators who still keeps the dub / reggae / dancehall tradition alive. He was contemplating a move to Philadelphia from Seattle and asked me for some advice. I offered for him to play an Ancient Puzzle Arts gig if he ever was in town.
Fast forward to this year, back in March, we made it happen. DJ Mista Chatman did an incredible live set with hardware and a mic. This ended up to be one of our most unique APA performances...expect classic dub, dubstep, UK funky, reggae, and even some jungle in the mix. As Chatman says....Tekalick!
