I'm trying to pinpoint the exact moment I met Chakana Inca. The first memory that comes to mind is meeting on a roof deck in Manhattan sometime between 2010-2012 at a party that I was invited to by a mutual friend. At that time, Chakana Inca was spinning records as his party starter alias Kid Chalupa. He was playing an excellent mix of crowd pleasers and subtle underground cuts in the mix. I liked his extroverted approach to reading the room and I introduced myself. I had no idea we would end up being good friends for so long since that day.
Chakana Inca, to me, is a mature departure from his playful alias Kid Chalupa. Chakana Inca's style is a much more personal expression of his life journey, and he is not afraid to embrace his Spiritual and Native influence in his music. It has been amazing to witness his transition from hip hop spot rocker to the limitless potential of his Chakana Inca expression.
For the month of January, ringing in a brand new year full of hopefully growth, Chakana Inca delivers a progressive, soulful, and uplifting journey with his Ancient Puzzle Arts mix for this month. You can easily hear his Chicago and New York City influences in this mix, as living in both cities (currently Brooklyn, NY) has made a great impact on his sound. Chakana Inca has been there since APA's inception, so it was only a matter of time before I needed to pay tribute to his incredible influence! Enjoy the first APA mix of 2021!
