Here at Ancient Puzzle Arts, we like to give credit where credit is due. It was only a matter of time before I wanted Wolf Dem to contribute an APA mix.
I have known both members of Wolf Dem, Ultraesthetic and Lady Prowl, since at least 2008. I used to do a monthly and periodic bass music party series with Lady Prowl called Subdivision. At the time, I was a dubstep *sigh* "purist," whereas Lady Prowl was more experienced enough to know variety is the spice of life. As I DJed with them more often, I picked up on the variety bug and incorporated it into my style.
The pre EDM music festival era of Philly's underground dance music community was more intimate and gritty than it is today. Finding out crews, communities and DIY spaces to play felt sparse and harder to find. But through Inciting parties (what is now Great Circles, and home to Wolf Dem's radio show series), I was able to meet Ultraesthetic and was blown away by their dark, fast, techno Detroit + UK fusion DJ style at the time.
A lot has changed since the warehouse parties of Philly 2008/2009. Wolf Dem formed in 2012 and has been playing all over the area, all the while ever evolving their very eclectic style. Their Vacation Beach parties pre-pandemic were a great meeting place to experience their anything goes music style.
