Molly in Berlin is Emma Nova Young, a Midwestern Independent Music Award-nominated multi-genre producer, DJ, and sound engineer now based in Philadelphia. Since 2005, Emma has been DJing, hosting radio shows, and releasing experimental hip-hop and bass music under the names HipGnosis and cnstru, as well as producing, mixing, and mastering for independent artists and record labels around the world. After taking a life-renewing hiatus since 2017, she’s back with an exciting new project, Molly In Berlin. Fueled by an intense love of the early hardcore and rave music she grew up with and connecting that to the DIY scenes of today, Molly In Berlin weaves a psychedelic sonic tapestry into mixes and productions, hard to box into any one genre or style, but united by a love of rhythm and motion and energy.
When you're throwing a periodic dance party, you take note of who ends up being regulars and people dedicated to dancing. My favorite people are the "first in, last out" people. People who come in the very beginning and stay until the bitter end. Molly in Berlin is that exact type of great person. When I first met her, she came early to support adri_an opening up Ancient Puzzle Arts at the 700. If you've ever been to the 700, there are comfortable couches there, so in between sets I would have extended, thought provoking conversations with Molly in Berlin in between all the dancing. Her enthusiasm and intellect are very captivating, so I definitely wanted to get Molly in Berlin on the podcast series.
Molly in Berlin is a regular member in the Philly dance music community. I originally met her at Void, and quickly began seeing her all throughout the city. She is very supportive of other people's creativity, and of course has her own creative expression to share.
This month's mix is a unique blend of classic deep house influences with synthetic, ethereal and trippy layering frequencies. Classic house pads, chords and vocals weave in and out of robotic synths, creating a bold, sonic journey that is distinctly her own.
